Technology is growing by leaps and bounds, which has allowed the development of different printing techniques, among which is the pad printing. This technique is very efficient for stamping different products and the curious thing about this method is that it is quite new. The history of pad printing begins in Switzerland in the late 1960s as a solution to the needs of the watch industry. The first pad printing machine was manual and used gelatin tampons.

This was done in order not to mistreat the watches, to reduce costs and decoration time. Over time, this method has become more industrialized, so that today silicone pads with a specific shape are used to impregnate the object with ink.

Pad printing process

A plate, which can be either metal or plastic, is covered with a photosensitive emulsion on which the image to be stamped is engraved. The engraving with the image is filled with ink, which is then taken by the pad to subsequently press it against the object and stamp the desired logo or image.

This process is carried out by a machine equipped with silicone pads, although the object must be manually placed on the surface for the printing to take place. In case more color is required, several successive prints are made with different stamps, all with different types of ink.

However, this printing method offers several advantages in terms of cost, versatility and speed. We’ll explain each of the benefits of this technique below.

Benefits of pad printing

Low investment

It turns out that pad printing is one of the cheapest printing techniques. Unlike other marking methods, with pad printing you can change graphics, ink and chemistry quickly, which is much more economical.

Can be used on various surfaces

It is also worth mentioning the flexibility it offers. Since, by using silicone pads or tampons, it can be easily adapted to different surfaces, it can even be used to stamp folding bottles, cylindrical or curved objects. Some items stamped with pad printing are: pens, mugs, bottle caps, microcomponents, keyboard and calculator keys, key rings, jewelry, badges, etc.

It is adaptable

Likewise, it is a versatile method with which different types of logos can be made, including logos with details or small letters. Of course, when it comes to complicated designs, it is more convenient to use other types of techniques, although, in the same way, pad printing can be used to make a great variety of logos. In fact, it is widely used for printing on small parts, irregular and fragile objects such as electronic components, because it offers a crisp and quality finish.

Short turnaround time

In addition, it is a fast process, by which large volumes of items can be customized in a much shorter period of time compared to other techniques. Only the object is prepared and placed on the surface and the equipment does the rest of the work.

Difference between pad printing and screen printing

There are some similarities between screen printing and pad printing. They are techniques with which different color logos can be made and both offer durability. However, it is important to point out some differences that are important, which is fundamental when choosing between one or the other.

First of all, pad printing offers greater versatility when it comes to customization, since it easily adapts to any surface, including irregular surfaces. On the contrary, circular screen printing, where pad adhesion is more complicated.

Secondly, there is the application of colors. With pad printing, it is possible to apply inks in succession, but with screen printing it is necessary to allow a period of time for the ink to dry before the next printing.

Finally, screen printing is used for large logos. On the other hand, with pad printing, small and medium-sized designs can be realized thanks to the size of the silicone pad. The marking areas will determine the choice between these two printing techniques.
